Regulatory Compliance
Understanding the chemical regulations that govern global trade
International trade in chemicals is governed by a set of regional and global regulatory frameworks. Understanding these systems helps you source responsibly, complete customs clearance, and import with confidence. Below is a plain-language overview of the major regulations you are most likely to encounter.
REACH — European Union
REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) is the EU’s framework for managing chemical substances. It requires substances manufactured in or imported into the EU to be registered with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), and it authorises or restricts the use of certain substances of concern.
TSCA — United States
The Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) governs chemical substances in the United States. It requires substances to be listed on the TSCA Inventory and authorises the U.S. EPA to restrict, or require notification for, new or hazardous substances.
GHS — Global
The Globally Harmonized System (GHS) standardises hazard classification and labelling — Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and labels — across markets, ensuring hazards are communicated consistently worldwide.
K-REACH — South Korea
South Korea’s registration framework, similar to the EU’s REACH, requires registration and notification of chemical substances placed on the Korean market.
